Jake Takes an Early Lead by hitting the Dark Slayer 

with Deadly Poison

Victory Seems Within our Grasp

The Dark Slayer switches to a bow and within a thrice Jake lies defeated.  Martel Nevarre appears to offer advice.  He warns that fighting mounted causes the Dark Slayer to switch to his bow.

To our dismay, during the battle, the Dark Slayer lost solidity.  While solidifying,  he could not be hit by a weapon.  Martel advised this happens when he is hit with offensive magic or poison.  While magic weapons and armor may be used effectively against the Slayer, using weapons which also have a spell associated with them cause the Dark Slayer to lose solidity, making him momentarily invulnerable.
